One piece for Munich

Pick up seven pieces of litter a week — one a day, or all of them on a Sunday walk. We count every piece.

How it works

  1. Pick it up

On your way, anywhere in Munich: a cigarette butt, a bottle cap, a cup.

  2. Bin it

In the nearest bin. That's all it takes.

  3. Log it

One tap in Committo — and the total above grows.

How much do you want to take on?

It's already picked when you join.

Why every piece counts

44%

of the pieces street cleaners pick up by hand are cigarette butts — just 1.7% of the weight. In cleaning, the number of pieces sets the effort, not their weight.

3,500

cigarette butts, collected by volunteers in one hour in 2019 along about 300 metres of the Isar bank, between the Reichenbach and Wittelsbacher bridges. In 2024 the city named that stretch a hotspot.

Sources: Abendzeitung, 2019 · City of Munich, 2024

almost 80,000

cigarette butts, plus 20,500 bottle caps and 1,568 bottles: that's what over 750 people collected at Munich's litter championship in 2025 — counted piece by piece.

We count pieces, not kilos, and we don't promise a cleaner city. Just this: every piece you pick up counts.

Collect safely

  • Bring a bag or a grabber.
  • Leave needles, broken glass and anything hazardous where it is.
  • From 1 March to 30 September birds are nesting: keep out of bushes, lakeshores and the Isar banks then — paths and squares are always fine.
  • Afterwards: wash your hands — done.

Good to know

Do I have to live in Munich?

No. Munich is the occasion, not a condition — anyone can join.

What counts as a piece?

Anything that doesn't belong on the street: a cigarette butt, a bottle cap, a cup. A piece is a piece, however small.

Why per week?

So it fits your life: one a day counts just like seven on a Sunday walk.

Can anyone see what I log?

No. This page only shows the total — never a name, never your days.

We're collecting as a group — what applies?

Under 20 people, you don't need a permit: put full bags labelled "Cleanup" next to a bin and let the city know at cleanup@muenchen.de. From 20 people, the city's waste management company supports you. More from the City of Munich

One piece is enough to start.
